Dog Walks 500 Miles To Find His Owner (AWW)

When Bucky the 3-year-old black Labrador was forced to move to a new home because his owner was not allowed to keep him, Bucky knew that the 500 miles between him and his owner were not going to keep them apart.

Bucky miraculously snuck away from his new home and ended up walking all the way from Virginia to Myrtle Beach, S.C. just to be with Mark Wessles, the owner he loves – that’s nearly 500 miles.

Wessells told TV station WPDE “I thought I was going to cry, but I didn’t. He definitely recognized me instantly,” he said “It’s just crazy he made it down here on his own. You know it’s like homeward bound is what I’m thinking.”

Wessells was forced to move Bucky into the care of his father after dogs were banned from where he lives in Myrtle Beach this past January.  A difficult decision to make, but unlike most dogs Bucky was placed in a loving home rather than being left to fend for himself in an unfamiliar shelter.

Bucky was helped along the way by a good samaritan named Brett Gallagher who spotted him during an early morning walk, and after hitting it off with his dog Hannah, Gallagher took Bucky in. Over the course of two weeks, Gallagher helped Bucky gain some weight back and scoured the Internet on sites such as Craigslist to try and find his owner.

It was during a routine vet visit with Bucky, that veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Thomas noticed that Bucky had a microchip in his ear that contained the name and phone number of his owner Mark Wessles, and when he was called it became clear that Bucky was at the veterinarian hospital in his neighbourhood.

When the vet learned Bucky’s real name and called him by, there was an immediate reaction.

“He was going nuts when the vet called him by his real name. His ears went right up,” Gallagher told ABC News.

Bucky is now having a brief visit with his owner, and is said to be having a great time “soaking up” all the smells of his former home and spending some time with the dad he was missing.

  1. Another wonderful example of our awesome animal brethren exhibiting clever behavior. Fortunately, our hi-tech advances are allowing individuals the world over to record and share experiences and observations of animals, be it domestic pets or wild animals, etc. I believe this is creating a major paradigm shift that is awakening more and more people to the realization that the way we’ve thought about and treated animals in the past, that is, as ‘dumb’ and not worthy of consideration, has been all wrong. Hopefully this knowledge and greater understanding will inspire all humanity to seek an end to any and all animal uses and abuses.
