The animal advocacy world has been up in arms over news that convicted dog fighter and killer Michael Vick recently adopted a new dog, with criticisms and concerns coming in from every corner of the Internet.
Hailed by The Humane Society of the United States as a repentant hero, and being propped up as spokesperson for both Subway and Nike hasn’t helped quell the tide of anger for animal lovers who believe Michael Vick should never be allowed to own another pet. That sentiment was echoed this week as shock jock Howard Stern stepped up to offer his take on the story.
During his radio show this week, Stern was asked by a caller what he felt about Michael Vick owning a new dog, and his response was both candid and full of the regular colourful language we have come to expect from him.
Was Howard Stern’s opinion right on the money? Should Michael Vick be allowed to have a dog? Should we all just move on? Leave a comment below.

As a person that has raised pit bull, American bull dogs and Staffordshire terriers I am amazed as to what humans can do to animals of any kind.. I have followed the Viktory dogs since they were acquired by Best Friends organization and what was done to these beautiful pit bulls Mr. Vick should have nothing to do with animals and explain to his children why they are not allowed to have a pet as he has no idea of what that means. Mr. Vick should have done to him that what was done to his dogs.. Georgia had all her teeth pulled by someone as to not bite the male dogs that were forced bred to her while strapped to a gadget to keep her still, I think that’s called disgusting and rape, one dog attached to jumper cables and killed and another drowned, I could go one with what I have read and watched on the documentary about these dogs. I wish there was some way to make this person feel some remorse but I honestly believe that will never happen. Most I can pray for is karma. Best Friends has done wonderful work with the 22 dogs they acquired. Go to their website to check out what all they do for all animals.

I agree! Someone with this much anger, to treat another living creature with so much unforgivable torture should not only be banned from owning any kind of pet but also children! Mr Vick is a very sick individual with disturbing tendencies and those thoughts and actions do not just disappear because you served time in prison! There is no rehabilitation for this man, he should be castrated because quite frankly I worry for the safety of his kids….but we all know, the pet he has chosen “to care for” will suffer first! And no doubt he will be more discrete about it next time! Gawd, is there anyone out there that thinks this is okay? I hope not!

it galls me to this day that he walked away from the dog abuse charges. He did not pay for his crimes. It galls me that he gets endorsements and a high paying career. He hasn’t done enough to atone for his sins or better the plight of animals in shelters.

He paid no dues for that! They got him for gambling and tax evasion. Part of his plea agreement was that he was never to own another dog. I agree with Howard on this one vick should never be allowed to own a dog and his children need to know why. And shame on the humane society for making him their spokes person. He was so evil and horrifying when he was bank rolling and killing dogs for his dog fighting ring that for him to own a dog now is jus a slap in the face to the rest of us that loves our dogs as family. I just scrolled through Vick’s and his wifes’ entire instagram feeds going back for over 3 years, and there is not 1, NOT 1, picture of the new dog Angel. Where is Angel?? Does anyone know?? Why not a single picture in the last 3 years?? Is she tied up outside on a chain? Or locked in a kennel in the back yard?? Is she even alive?? Someone needs to find out what happened to her asap!!

If he didn’t have money he wouldn’t have been allowed per the law to have any animals and to say its not a pittbull what difference does it make. The only reason some people agree with him having a dog is because he uses his children as an excuse as to they should not be punished for his actions. Well Mr. Vick your wrong they shouldn’t have an animal in the same house as you. If you want them to have an animal them move out. The very first issue that needs to be addressed is that sentient beings cannot be “OWNED”. Any person who adopts a sentient being and agrees to provide guardianship to that individual for the rest of its natural life must have to go through an evaluation process first. Obviously Michael Vick would FAIL that evaluation miserably. Therefore, nothing else needs to be said about Mr. Vick.
We must change our perception of what animals are and then change the system to protect them more effectively.

NO! What happened in the conviction of court procedures that a stipulation was not included that Michael Vick was forever restricted from owning any animals??? Not just a dog but any animal. So his house and 11 acres was turned into a sanctuary…that should have been confiscated. He owes a life long stipend to the rescues of dogs. Even if he learned from the error of his ways he should not be allowed to have animals. Did Michael Vick give up names of ALL he knew affiliated with the dog fighting circuit? I think not. His apologetic, donating to the cause, has been more so by instruction of his legal team I bet. I don’t trust a child abuser that has been released why would I trust someone who authorized such cruelty to another living being as I consider my dogs my children, my family members. I believe someone should appeal to the court to amend his release to include no ownership or physical contact with animals.

There is a big misconception here. Michael Vick did not serve a day in prison for what he did to those dogs. All animal cruelty charges against him were dropped in the plea agreement. He served time for violation of the RICO statutes–organized gambling, etc. As part of his plea agreement, he was never supposed to own another animal. This is a man that attached electrodes to dogs’ ears and a car battery, threw them in the swimming pool and let them drown, slowly and painfully. He hung dogs from tree limbs and beat them to death. And maybe the most gruesome act of all, he particularly enjoyed tossing small bait animals into the pits and laughed as they tried to defend themselves from his much larger dogs and were ripped to shreds, Barbarian at best and monster at worst. And he started doing this as a youngster of thirteen or fourteen. And don’t give me any of that crap about it being a cultural thing! Wrong is wrong is wrong, no matter where you grew up. Also the HSUS wanted to kill all his dogs. A pit bull rescue group stepped in and worked very hard to rehabilitate the dogs and find them appropriate homes. Spokesdog Ray was a beautiful soul who ultimately died from a disease commonly found in dogs used in fighting.

I love you, Howard for being so upfront regarding the POS named Vick. His children will one day read the court reports that he personally electrocuted and repeatedly slammed a dog on the ground until it died. In most industries, a criminal record for petty theft would haunt the job applicant. Misconduct results in suspension of one’s licence. Even if that person “serves their time” the consequences of those actions do not just “disappear.”
I think the main objection is that in some industries, such as sports and entertainment, popularity and profits override the consequences that would happen to the majority of other humans on the planet for far less objectionable acts.

he never paid for animal abuse, for money and racketeering. you have not checked out the facts. he put battery cables on the ears of dogs and put them in the pool and revved the engines. He used dogs as jump ropes and broke their backs. there were claw marks on the inside of his cement pool liner of dogs trying to get out while being electrocuted.

If someone moved in next to you who you knew tortured and murdered people but served their time in jail, would you welcome them with open arms and treat them no differently? Would you allow Vick to dogsit your dog? Yes, he paid for his crime and we should move on from that. But he tortured and murdered countless animals. These were not quick, easy deaths. You don’t come back from that. There has to be something seriously wrong with someone to be able to inflict that much torture on another living being.

Or the little dog he used as “bait?” Or the ones he drowned when they were too battered to fight any longer? People can change…psychopaths will always be psychopaths. Yes we as society need to learn to forgive and give second chances. But there are consequences to our actions, once paid for they can be forgiven but some things you just don’t get second chances. A molester can be forgiven but I would not let him/her watch my child. A murderer, I would not turn my back on, likewise a dog killer should not own a dog and be put into temptation to reoffend. We become at fault when we knowingly temp others with their addictions. So this man should never own a pet! That is the consequences of his action.

I’m going to go,out on a limb….. You must have NO compassion for innocent animals. Do you also abuse and torture and murder animals? With your lack of compassion toward animals and your compassion for animal abusers, I sure as heck hope you don’t own an animal. A man is judged on how he treats animals. Your in such denial to think That anyone who can have such evil in them to torture and murder an innocent creature won’t have that same urge to do it again. It’s a sickness that can’t be cured. You need to wake the heck up and do your research of what he did to these poor dogs and how they suffered tremendously before they died. That kind of evil should never ever own another living animal of any kind. He chose to do what he did without any compassion or remorse.

Not only should Vick NOT own a dog, he should not be making millions from the NFL. I will not buy Nike products or any other merchandise connected with Vick. A Belgian Malonois should not be a part of that family. They are working dogs and are closely connected with being trained for guard dogs and K9 dogs. This is bred into them. I try to balance my thinking with regard to Mr Vick , Between being an American and all that it is “Supposed” to represent with regard paying our debt to society etc, and being rescue person who focuses mainly on Pit Bulls (and mainly on rescuing them from Southern states where the attitude towards animals is shall we say ” Woefully lacking” . However Mr Vick never really did pay a debt with regard to horrors he inflicted on Dogs. If you check why he went to prison,,It was not for that reason. Also He was in a prime position to make a huge and valuable statement with regard to just how “Wrong” The culture of dog fighting is. But dropped the proverbial ball. I do not believe he is repentant so speak in any way, but what do you expect when he is part of the NFL culture which is nothing more than Americans proving we are the modern image of the failed Roman empire.

How these people can get away with it even though everyone knows, it may be their subconscious that has buried it, but they know he’s guilty and should never own another pet. Thank You Howard Stern for giving public voice to the opinion most of us have concerning Michael Vick. What ma de me even angrier when Vick announced that he had gotten a dog for his children so they could have a family pet, I pictured a beagle or lab. Do you know what he got??? He got them a Belgian Malinois!! When that Navy Seal team went in to get Bin Laden, they had a malinois with them. They are one of the smartest, bravest breeds e are. And to e make matters worse, he then commented that he was taking this dog to Petsmart for training!!! Michael Vick is not remorseful about what he did nor is he a reformed man. He should be watched closely because it is only a matter of time before he is involved in some form of animal abuse.

The HSUS takes $ under the false guise of sheltering animals. They do not have a shelter. They can not adopt out any animals. What they did do is provide character reference for Vick to allow him to sidestep any/all issues of law. That’s what donation $ goes to.

Sandi Landau, they do have shelters. In Westport CT there is a Humane Society shelter where dogs and cats are cared for and adopted out.

They receive no funding nor do they receive any media support. …..in fact, often the locals will do all the work in the large puppy mill busts until the HSUSeless and Assssspca skip in and take credit, media attention and notoriety. As a breeder and trainer, I do not know ANY ethical breeder who would have sold him a dog. Especially a Malinois! Then to say he is going to Petsmart for training is idiotic! They have no idea on how to properly train dogs. I have had many clients whose dogs I’ve had to help with because of the damage Petsmart trainers had done. What a shame.

Soooo–in Howard’s comments he never did tell us where that asshole Vick got his dog. I was told it was the HSUS. I contacted them and they wrote back telling me that they, ‘don’t adopt dogs out’. What’s the truth and how can we prove he got the dog from the HSUS?

Hello…they need to know why they can’t have a dog or any other animal. How will they learn that what he did was not okay? How will they learn that when you do something wrong, you just get to wipe the page clean. Some role model. He doesn’t know the first thing about being a good pet owner and never will. All the big celebrites/ musicians who love animals should MAKE A DENT in the problem by giving it MASS MEDIA EXPOSURE … like a LIVE AID concert for animals. A different opinion- The amount of emotion put into animals is ridiculous. RIght or wrong those were fighting dogs. Bred to fight. He didn’t steal herding dogs or seeing eye dogs and try to force them to fight. Mr. Vick did not rape a woman or a child, he did not murder in cold blood. Mr. Vick used those animals for what they were bred for. It may not be for the weak of heart and it may have been wrong but that is what those dogs are bred for. And he certainly paid a price for it.
In my opinion the real crime occurs when inept pet owners are shocked that thier pit bull (a really neat breed by the way) comes apart and tears into a neighbor’s dog, or worse yet a child.
We are a society of excess, we are spoiled and our common sense has been sabatoged by animal rights extremists, zeolots and Walt Disney (he made the cute little animals talk- they don’t by the way.) We live in the United States of America (remember freedom) and yet a family from a culture that eats cat or dog could not go to the pound and pick out an animal.
My point being that one, weather or not he owns another dog does not really deserve this much emotion or attention. I’m pretty sure he knows he is in the spotlight for how he treats said family pet. And two, the United States needs a huge dose of common sense and to get it’s priorities in order. Let’ get this worked up about lynching a child molester, a rapist or a serial killer. How about being this compassionate about comforting the victims of said crimes?

You know…. those dogs were NOT fighters at birth. They were MADE INTO FIGHTING DOGS. You know these… fighting dogs that were rescued from the Vick Kennels, they are THERAPY dogs now. They are GOOD dogs. They were forced to fight. And people put effort into animals because they have no voice. Even moreso than the actual deaths were the manner in which he killed those dogs, drowning, electrocution. The were born innocent pups, beaten tortured and starved and ultimately died in fear. EJ – Vick used his OWN family pets as bait dogs, putting them in the ring – laughing and thinking it was funny when they got injured or killed by the fighting dogs. And bait dogs aren’t bred for fighting – they are used to train the fighters – and they are viciously attacked severely, often times to the point of death.
And don’t you dare have the audacity to say that just because we are advocates for animals that some how precludes us from also being advocates for all those who are victims of crime.
I have 2 pit bull rescues, one is a tri-pawd found on the side of the road so badly mangled he had to have his leg amputated. The other was found wandering the streets of Brooklyn, NY. Both are the most loving, affection, goofy, and playful dogs. Dogs – that’s what they are.

Those dogs weren’t just bred to fight, THEY WERE FORCED TO FIGHT! If they didn’t want to fight, they were tortured to death. These animals were beaten, shocked and starved to death, they weren’t humanely put down. Vick and his cronies loved to watch them suffer! And the bait animals which Vick took particular delight throwing into the pits, watching them be ripped to shreds and laughing about their futile efforts to defend themselves were no bred to fight. They were someone’s pet. I guess that is okay with you, Whoopi Goldberg said we wouldn’t understand, it’s a cultural thing. Deliberate cruelty and savagery of this magnitude, whether the victim is human or not is wrong. And you do realize that many serial killers and child abusers do start out torturing animals. That’s how Bundy and Dahmer started out. The FBI has now started a registry to keep track of animal cruelty cases. And besides, Vick did not serve a day in prison for what he did to those dogs. The animal cruelty charges were dropped in the plea agreement. He went to prison for organized gambling and violation of the RICO statutes.As far as I am concerned, he has never been punished for his merciless barbarity.

I remember when he said he was considering another dog once the probation was over.. He said it wouldn’t be another pitbull. I don’t care if it’s not a pitbull, getting another dog period is NOT OK! Whether it’s a pitbull or not he should not be allowed to own one or touch one ever again! I had 2 pitbulls, have had a few dogs in my life and I wouldn’t sell a dog, cat, or any other pet to him for ANY amount of money. It’s sad what some people are willing to do for a little extra cash. :( I cherish my pets, they’re part of my family, and so are their babies. They deserve to be treated as such and protected from a monster like Vick!

What in the Name of All that’s Holy were they thinking????? I know people who won’t give a dog to someone I hadn’t checked out, because I want to make sure they go to a loving home. As I recall there was something in all thatunpleasantness that did say he couldn’t own another pet, but I am misremembering. Someone from SPCA should check into that. NIKE has, I believe, resigned him for ads, but I could be wrong on that one, too. I wouldn’t allow him to own another dog unless he could prove to the court that he undergone counseling and his therapist was willing to testify that he was suitable to own another pet.

It never ceases to amzae me what money can and does buy. Vick was given opportunities the majority never receive, receive a salary only the few ever get, and he has abused it. Verses being someone our youth can look up to in sports, he has disgraced the game of football, insulted the youth, was allowed to breed (& I am refering to the reality he has children) and will continue to live in the lap of luxury. This man as all shared has siad “up yours!” to the laws all others must comply to. I truly believe this slap against the law, justifing ownership of a dog, or any pet, using his children as the reason/excuse as to why this is okay shows WHAT A USER OF ALL THINGS AT THE EXPENSE OF ALL THINGS this so called human really is. The prison time ordered should have been sentenced to be that of the life expectancy of the dog he killed, not 23 months. AND NO EARLY RELEASE. If this was done he would be past his prime of being able t o return to play football. I truly believe Vick’s is in front of the Karma train… just a matter of time. Finally, if I had my way, when at a football game when he is on the field I would stand and turn my back. When his team plays we dont watch that game. It may not stop him, but it allows me to feel as if I am not encouraging his success. If enough of the “football fan” world would NOT watch his team play maybe the powers that are will realize “money sometimes buys mistakes”. I am a firm believer in God. I believe what goes around comes around. And I can only pray the good Lord forgives my disgust of Vick’s and all others that abuse animals or humans. I do not own a pet. I don’t because our lifestyle is one that would not allow a pet to have us around as often as it should have us. Our yard is not one that is large enough to allow a pet to run, play and enjoy. But a few ofour friends have pets, boxers, pitbulls, we called them our nephews! (all have male dogs). Regardless Vick’s got away with murder.

I love the fact that your friends dogs you refer to as nephews I call two friends my anna’s uncle and aunt so I know that your soul must be kind towards our bullies… One small comment I’ve rescued three dogs so far my remaining one is a 13 year old pit which for the last 10 years has been at my side loving me with a heart that makes me a better person. a person who has raised the call for those that can not speak. over the last 10 years my life has changed considerably relationships housing ..the university degree I left behind while doing my masters (leaving a province that was bringing in BSL) to a more friendly one where i live now your life will never be that perfect place you think like having children there is no perfect time life gets in the way jobs change economy so forth saving a life is the memory you will have…When I left ontario i sold everything packed my car and two pits and headed west …no home to go to no back yard but my dogs have been loved I can’t always do the rockwellian (to use a word of our famous host) version of a home but I’ve never not loved my dogs they have never gone hungry at my hand, they have never been punished physically, They were rescues, taken not forgotten, not euthanized at the hands of A.C…hopefully you could do the same…if not now please consider it in your not so distant future one of gods creatures waits for someone just like you to love.

No Michael Vick should never be allowed to own another animal again! He has demonstrated over & over his belief of what a dog is for; representing his manhood! We also now know from numerous accounts & sickening testimony what he did to those dogs who did not “represent”! A leopard does not change its spots nor a tiger its stripes. Vick is what he is & will forever remain an abuser to animals. He was never convicted of animal cruelty or abuse, but that does not change what he really is. What kind of message is being sent that someone who abused dogs to such proportions & torture is now allowed to have a dog? Cindy, HSUS is all about making profit for lobbying and marketing, they do NOT spend alot of money for shelters, so it is good you aren’t going to continue to support them. Instead, support your local ASPCA or shelters, or any breed rescue organization in your area. They almost always need money, where HSUS just needs it for their high paid execs.

Not only has Wayne Pacelle championed Vick, he was also a big player in Vick getting a plea deal to lower the charges against Vick in his prosecution, to OMIT his crimes against the dogs. Vick is NOT remorseful, nor will he EVER be, remorseful for the horrific ends to so many lives. Vick should never in the rest of his life be in charge of or responsibile for ANY vulnerable living thing, not a dog, a cat, a hamster or a baby. I concur with howard stern totally. how is it any different – a person convicted of gun charges gets a ban for a given period of time after their jail sentence (some being a lifetime) .You have different driving offences in which you can be sentence to jail, and after you loose the privilege to drive for some period. Yet Mr. Vick (and I use the term loosely because I want my statement to be valued) has no need for money, power or fame that might com from running an underground illegal dog fighting operation, lies to the court system about the level of involvement, gets sentence does his time. Then comes out and when an interviewer asks about if he has regrets in his life he says no…when pushed he responds saying the amount of time served was to harsh. then in the infinite wisdom in which he hides behind the needs of his children then acquires a dog. Where is the justice system ? why have they not banned him (personally) from every being a owner of any animal? how can he have the nerve to say he wants a dog to show his children how to respect animals!!!! and on a side note nike recently pulled endorsements to Lance Armstrong amid doping allegations …yet continue to have Mr. Vick a convicted criminal for dog fighting be their representative …exactly how can they set an example for todays youth?

Howard Stern is right on the money. Animal abusers are like pediphiles in that they will never mentally change wanting to abuse. This dog does something annoying to him, who knows what sort of punitive horrors this dog will endure. What is wrong with the court system that they did not restrain Vick from ever owning another animal? Is it because he has celebrity status? Vick is a vulgur, abusive human being. I want to know how he got a dog. I thought he was never allowed to own a dog again…I so agree with everything Howard said and is so true….So the dog needs to be taken off of vick the dick and given to a loving family!!!

thank you for speaking out against the psychopathic savage dog torturer / murderer – he has never expressed any remorse for all of his heinous, vicious crimes – he said he was sorry for all the hassle it caused him while he laughed & snickered. he, truly, is a parasite. and yes, he has endorsements too numerous to mention. (nike, and every sports store across america has his line of sportswear) – he’s on top of the world because of the ridiculous laws of our land. and, by the way, i believe, he served a hideous 18 mos and some of the dogs he did not electrocute, drown or hang or beat to death are still suffering.
i am infuriated, every day, when i see his despicable face all over the internet and facebook.

I find it impossible to believe that no where is it written that this brutal beast can never have a pet of any kind for as long as he lives. At least not until he has endured the same level of torture and pain that he inflicted on all those dogs. I would love to see him flopping around in a pool of water with live battery cables attached to his ‘nodes. And the HSUS needs to fire that ass that sided with Vick. I hope Vicks kids do not know what kind of father they really have.

Thank you Howard for telling it like it is. Michael Vick should never have dogs or children. He is plain stupid and evil. Why is it that a sports “star” can get away with rape, murder and animal cruelty and people still will go and see him? Something wrong here.
