October Surprise Delivers Internet RickRoll

A group calling itself OctSurprise on Twitter last week announced that it would release damning documents against either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama ahead of tonight’s last presidential debate.  That all ended at 6:30PM Eastern when the octsurprise.com site officially rickrolled the Internet by instead posting the Rick Astley Youtube video “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

Speculation had been growing over the last few days that the claims being made by OctSurprise were in fact an Internet hoax, and the Twitter account behind it eluded to as much, but all that was confirmed with the RickRoll becoming cemented on their website.

For those of you not familiar, a RickRoll is described by Wikipedia as such:

Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up“. The meme is a bait and switch; a person provides a hyperlink seemingly relevant to the topic at hand, but actually leads to Astley’s video. The link can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true destination of the link without clicking.

People led to the music video are said to have been rickrolled. Rickrolling has extended beyond web links to playing the video or song disruptively in other situations, including public places, like an appearance of Astley himself in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. The meme has helped to revive Astley’s career.

And how did the octsurprise.com website commemorate the not so crafty rickroll?  In true form of course.
