Product Review: The Snugg iPhone Bamboo Wood Case – Style Trumps Protection

Being an independent writer, when an offer for free stuff comes through your email inbox it’s hard not to jump at the opportunity to write a product review for some free swag.  In this case, I took up an offer from the good people at Snugg to test out several iPhone cases, and in this first of two product reviews I’ll be introducing you to the Snugg Real Bamboo Wood Case.

Let’s get started shall we?

First off, let’s set the stage in regards to the four categories used while reviewing the iPhone case in question, to give you, the consumer, a clear picture of the process.  In reviewing the Snugg Real Bamboo Wood Case (retailing at $34.99CDN) the following four categories were used:  Style, Function, Protection and Reaction.  Each category was scored on a scale from 1 to 5, with an average score being taken from all four categories.  Sounds easy enough, right?

So then, let’s get right to the review.

Style – 4.5

The case was pretty much what you would expect from something made out of bamboo:  lightweight, organic and offering a real sense of low environmental impact.  Where it impressed beyond the expected was the continuity in the grain and pattern of the wood being used.  It wasn’t just a patchwork of bamboo pieces, it was a full stack of continuous bamboo that really helped to hide the seam where the two pieces of the case slid together to complete the application of the product.  Style-wise it left very little to be desired, and with its subtle and organic charm, earned a 4.5 out of 5 in the style department.

Function – 3.0

One of the key components to any iPhone case is its functionality, and the ease of use and access to the buttons on the peripheral of the device that it allows.  The bamboo case, although stylish and slick, made accessing the volume buttons and the lock button at the top of the phone very clumsy and awkward.  To lock the phone, or to adjust the volume, it was necessary to use unfamiliar angles or finger positions to get inside the area where the bamboo had been cut out to allow access.  It took at least a week of reviewing the case to start getting used to the way its design necessitated a different approach to using it, but the learning curve was enough to earn it only a 3.0 out of 5 in function.

Protection – 0

Sadly, this case received no score at all in this category, due to the fact that when the iPhone was accidentally dropped from only 4 feet off the ground, the case broke apart in two places and it allowed the back glass panel of the phone to suffer its first crack ever.  The fall was what many would consider a mild to moderate event, and the case simply did not live up to any expectation one would have in it saving their phone from damage and the case being usable after a small drop.

IMG_2974For failing to survive one small drop, and for causing me to incur my first ever cracked surface, this case scores a 0 out of 5 for protection.

Reaction – 4.5

On of the best tests a reviewer can put any product through is the “friend test”, which in this review involved gauging the unprompted reaction that friends and even strangers had towards the product first from seeing it, then by using it.  This case caught many an eye from both friends and strangers alike, and sparked a few conversations ranging from the environment to renewable resources.  The only critique which came from anyone handling the phone was once again the access to the buttons.  In general however, the case was extremely well liked at first glance and caused many people to want to touch the case and inspect its design, which is why it earned the high score of 4.5 out of 5 for reaction.

Final Score – 3.0

What the Snugg Bamboo Wood Case delivers in style and appeal to the customer, it loses some in functionality and then completely fails in security and protection of the phone.  If you’re looking for a case that your friends will be impressed by, and the safety of your phone really doesn’t matter to you, then this might be the case the for you.

However, if you’re like me, and your iPhone is one of the most expensive purchases you’ve made this year and you want to protect your investment from damage, then this case is definitely not the one you are looking for.

I know I won’t be buying this one as Christmas gift this year for my friends or family, that’s for sure.
