Oh, Canada! Canuck Supreme Court Strikes Down Anti-Prostitution Laws!

prostitution laws in Canada

VIA AATTP:  This December, while most of America was busy arguing about what color Santa is, whether Festivus poles were offensive, and counting the number of gun related incidents during the holidays, those crazy socialists to the North were tying up some loose ends in their Supreme Court before New Year’s and unanimously struck down the country’s anti-prostitution laws.

As far as Canadian Supreme court is concerned, laws against prostitution put workers of the “oldest profession” at risk of loss to their guarantee to life, liberty and security of the person, as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In short, by criminalizing prostitution and outlawing brothels, those who work in the industry are forced to deal with organized crime influences, violence from their clients, and hurdles to life saving social services – something that the 9-0 decision has now forced the current government in Canada by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to deal with.

The ruling has not opened the doors to a complete free-for-all in the country though, as the Canadian Supreme Court has given the government a one year reprieve to draft new legislation that falls in line with the decision.

According to the Huffington Post:

“Prostitution isn’t illegal in Canada, but many of the activities associated with prostitution are classified as criminal offences.

The high court struck down all three prostitution-related laws: against keeping a brothel, living on the avails of prostitution, and street soliciting. The landmark ruling comes more than two decades after the Supreme Court last upheld the country’s anti-prostitution laws.”

So, if you’re thinking about taking a trip to Canada any time soon to see its majestic peaks, gorgeous wetlands, or pristine picturesque valleys, just make sure you’re following the current laws that are on the books, or you could end up in the Canadian clinker still.
